As you know, the City of Vancouver is updating the Chinatown Economic Revitalization Action Plan (CRAP) and revising Chinatown’s Development Policies.

Proposed changes include height restrictions being laxed (with a maximum of 150′ or 14 stories on Main St), 200′ wide storefronts, and gutting the public consultations (open houses and public hearings), making it a free for all for future market developments. As per usual with consultation processes, the City failed to notify residents in many buildings in Chinatown, Strathcona, and the Downtown Eastside.

After our press conference last November, the City has agreed to organize another Open House, which is taking place tomorrow.  Poor people under attack! What do we do?  Stand up, fight back!

Join our disruptance tomorrow to call out the City for silencing the voices’ of the residents and excluding them from making decisions about their home, Chinatown!

Use the City’s online comment form to support our demands!

As part of the development policy review process, the City is “accepting” comments (technically the City said the deadline was January 27, 2017 so please submit your comments ASAP). You can submit them online here.

Join us in telling the City:
1) Chinatown to be one zoning district
2) At least 50% of the gross floor area of new developments in Chinatown be for social housing
3) “Historic Area” maximum height of 50ft (100% social housing projects considered separately)
4) Building frontages 50ft wide maximum (not-for-profit developments considered separately)
5) Immediately designate Chinatown as a Heritage Conservation Area
6) Support culturally appropriate Chinatown retail (property tax deductions for culturally appropriate Chinatown retail, property tax levy for culturally inappropriate Chinatown retail)
7) No chain stores (like in San Francisco’s Chinatown)
8) Including demands for 105 Keefer St.’s site:

  • Reject the rezoning application by Beedie Living
  • No market housing at this site
  • For all 3 levels of government to acquire the 105 Keefer St. site
  • 100% social housing at shelter rate or 30% of the OAS income
  • An intergenerational, multi use community space, with an emphasis on seniors
